The dramatic fate of two Podhale families entangled in an unknown and ambiguous chapter of the history of Poland and the highland community.
It is no secret that Jędrek Zawrat, a talented mountaineer, is in love with beautiful Bronka Skorus. However, due to a family decision, the girl’s hand is
given to the older of the brothers, the stable and serious Maciek. The proud Jędrek abandons his home town to seek oblivion among the Krakow
bohemians. Meanwhile, a German scientist, Wolfram, develops a theory that the Highlanders of the Podhale are descendants of the old Germanic tribe of the
Pragotes. Shortly after the outbreak of war and the occupation of Poland, the Nazis make the Highlanders an offer of cooperation. Maciej Zawrat, supported
by many prominent families, unequivocally rejects it. However, seduced by German promises, Jędrek, hoping to win back his beloved – and save his
homeland and his community from wartime annihilation – decides to cooperate.
